In the past, a variety of methods have been used to enclose the building; everything from brick and mortar, to stucco, to stud walls. Over the years, we at Timbersmiths have developed a system using stress-skin panels which fasten to the outside of the frame.
These panels are a sandwich of exterior sheathing (usually oriented strandboard, O.S.B.), expanded polystyrene foam insulation and interior drywall all glued together with PVA adhesive. Wall panels have 5 1/2" thick Foam (R-24), and Roof panels have 9 3/8" thick Foam (R-39). Kitchen panels have an additional sheet of O.S.B. behind the drywall for installing kitchen cabinets. These panels provide continuous insulation and go up quickly. Windows and doors can be placed anywhere within the panels.
We feel that these panels are an excellent complement to the timber frame particularly because they allow the wooden timbers to remain visible inside the building.
In this high-tech age it is comforting to be able to sense directly the strength of a structure as well as the natural origins of that strength.
Red oak timbers (a renewable resource) remain visible in the interiors of our buildings and keeping in touch with the appropriateness and beauty of nature every day.
