In its most simple form it is an open frame consisting of large vertical posts connected by large horizontal beams. These members are joined together using simple rugged joinery and fixed with wooden pegs. Smaller diagonal braces complete the structure.
We think of it as a most appropriate and esthetic way of putting together a wooden building. It draws on a construction tradition which can be traced back through our ancestors here in America to Europe and on back through history about as far as you could care to go. The principles have always remained the same and the final product continues to demonstrate them: strength, durability, efficient use of material, flexibility in design, and beauty.
In this high-tech age it is comforting to be able to sense directly the strength of a structure as well as the natural origins of that strength.
Red oak timbers (a renewable resource) remain visible in the interiors of our buildings and keeping in touch with the appropriateness and beauty of nature every day.
